The play Kings of the Road 1980 is a magnum opus of Hirata Oriza and it is based on actual events experienced by the Japanese author during his travels across the world after dropping out of high school. The play is set during the 1980s as a period of abundance in terms of monumental global events, such as the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Gwangju Democratization Movement, the Iran-Iraq War, etc. The play portrays the conflicts and challenges of the time as the hidden side of the miraculous economic growth, through the story of Japanese people who leaves the motherland behind and wanders through foreign lands.
