“Transfers”
By Lucy Thurber
Transfers was written by American playwright Lucy Thurber, and deals with equality in the education system. Clarence and Christopher from New York's slums, who graduated from a two-year college, are about to transfer to a prestigious university in the Eastern part of US. The two young men, who used to be friends, coincidentally run into each other on the night before their entrance interview. The two, who have outstanding talents but were unable to concentrate on their studies due to their poverty-stricken environment, will conduct a mock interview with the help of David, an employee from a non-government organization who supports them. The two, who must look good in front of the interviewer, fall into the dilemma of deciding whether to show themselves as they are or to hide themselves and show what the interviewer wants to see. At the time of its premiere in 2018, the play received rave reviews as a work that examines and critiques the absurdity of the overall educational system and college entrance standards. The play will be directed by Hyesook Youn, the winner of the 11th DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards for Performing Arts.
