The Welkin is a new work produced in 2020 by British playwright Lucy Kirkwood, well-known for Chimerica (2013). In 1759, the daughter of a village leader was found brutally murdered in a remote area of England. The suspect is Sally Poppy, a 21-yearold woman who worked as a maid in the leader’s mansion. Sentenced to death penalty, Poppy leads for a reduced sentence, saying she is pregnant. Twelve women members of the jury ather in the upstairs attic in the court in order to determine the authenticity of Poppy’s pregnancy. Women constantly question and explore the issues of equality in labor, class, religion, law, gender, etc. in the process of finding the truth. The Welkin premiered at the National Theatre in UK in 2020, and will debut in Korea as part of the DOOSAN Humanities Theater series.
