Make Home, Sweet Home is a performance that generates similar images to approach unreachable places. The interviewees in the performance describe a location that cannot be visited by the majority of South Koreans. This location is then produced into three formats: through AI-generated images, the performers’ depiction of the images, and choices made by the audience. Then, the location is reconstructed into a new venue through the participants’ interpretation and judgment. This process of manifesting an actual site within a different place, allows the audience to witness South Korea’s geopolitical limits and the biases of AI data. Make Home, Sweet Home asks whether, through the communal event of a performance, imagination, awareness, and interpretation can serve as a measure for revisiting today’s divided society.
Jaeha Ban explores the preset state of the Cold War and how national borders function in personal experiences, trivial incidents, and everyday objects. Through the geopolitical limits of South Korea, he searches for new ways to view ideologies, laws, and institutions by alternating both the global and local,
contemporary and non-contemporary. Thus, the artist shows how personal feelings about the current age can be expressed in various media. Ban is part of the visual art collective Image Center of Divided Korea formed in 2021.
