Thin Girls
DAC Artist Juyoung Park is a playwright and director who listens attentively to the stories of women overlooked by history. Using women’s limits, desires, and unmet needs as a mirror, she aims to gaze deeply into the human heart. Thin Girls, based on the novel of the same name by New Zealand writer Diana Clarke, follows the story of twin sisters Rose and Lily who struggle with eating disorders. Rose is in a rehabilitation facility for those with anorexia and eating disorders. There, she has put her life on hold. She meets other thin girls who differ in age and appearance, but they are all just like her—girls getting thinner together and dying together. If only their weight could remain in a zero state, neither increasing nor decreasing, they would want for nothing. This is all that Rose wishes for. But everything she has tried to put on hold begins to break apart, and Rose is overcome with life and desires that she can no longer ignore. Through characters who live with a hatred of their bodies, Park focuses on desire and contempt for the female body and the solidary of women who strive to break free from these restraints.
