Capital of Hillbilly Mari
Injin Won is an actor and playwright who is part of the creative collective Sangsangdoomock. Her recent work explores Korean society’s prejudice and antipathy toward specific illnesses like AIDS and schizophrenia. She uses her platform to critique systems that readily dismiss individual dignity in favor of state and societal interests.
Capital of Hillbilly Mari reflects on the merits of communal living within a capitalist system driven by profit and competition. The play follows Mari, a theatrical creator struggling to adapt to life in Korea, a country with a high suicide rate. One day, she finds mold in her house and realizes that she is slowly transforming into mold herself. Meanwhile, the play introduces Watanabe Itaru, the author of The Rotten Economy Discovered by a Country Baker (The Soup, 2014). Watanabe explains the difference between natural yeast and artificial enzymes, highlighting the importance of healthy bread. The play juxtaposes Mari’s struggles in a strict capitalist society with Watanabe’s life as a writer and baker in rural Japan. Through audience participation in the baking process, the play encourages reflection on the value of staying true to oneself.
