Itaewon Trans-gender Club 2F
The Imoogi Project’s “Recording Itaewon” initiative s the history of Itaewon’s transgender sex worker community. This creative collective—composed of queer artists, women researchers, and sex workers’ rights activists Sooyoung Kim, Ilran Kim, Sanghoon Moon, Jaeyun Seong, Yeoreum, and Solo Han—brings the often-overlooked history of transgender individuals in Korean society to light through its stage productions.
Itaewon Trans-gender Club 2F is a ary-style play that explores the vibrant performing arts scene of Itaewon’s transgender clubs, which have been evolving since the 1970s. The play delves into the lives of transgender women sex workers who are integral to these clubs. These transgender clubs in Itaewon have served as the main venues for fostering the transgender community and its performing arts scene. The performances within these clubs are deeply intertwined with the popular music of the era. Transgender performers contribute their unique perspectives by blending contemporary culture with personal stories and offering original interpretations of popular songs.
This play presents the lives and artistic expressions of transgender creators, using popular music from their respective eras to tell their stories—both bitter and sweet.
