1994, 2014, and the Space in between
DAC Artist Hae-youl Bae is a playwright whose stories illustrate incidental events that unfold in quotidian life— seemingly minor or major situations which reveal an understanding of humanity and goodwill. Focusing on marginalized voices in society, he observes those who make efforts at compassion despite the violence and hatred they face.
1994, 2014, and the Space in between is composed of two stories set 20 years apart. Act 1, set in 1994, begins with the scene where Yunjae Choi, a victim of hate crime against sexual minorities, agrees to do a favor for Heeyoung Choi, who is admitted to the same hospital room. The play jumps to 2014 in Act 2, which tells the story of Semin Choi, a funeral director working at a provincial funeral hall, and his encounter with mysterious mourners. Both episodes are set against the backdrop of certain social disasters, and the characters are each affected by absurd deaths in their own ways. Hesitant but determined to move forward in the face of others’ sufferings, the characters show that even awkward and imperfect attempts at goodwill can reach someone, somewhere.
