The story of “American comfort women” (Korean prostitutes who catered to the U.S. military from the mid-1950s to early 1990s) first began as a means of treating the trauma of the old ladies who underwent the experience. It was part of the efforts to restore social dignity to the old women by raising awareness and promoting social empathy. The play Outside of the Door is an extension of such endeavors. Going beyond merely bandaging the scars of the past, the play features a cast of the actual “American comfort women” to show how they are living alongside the younger generations today. The play highlights the fact that these old ladies are not merely victims of the past, but are also our contemporaries.
