DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Boyun Jang’s solo exhibition “Acquainted with the Night” from November 13th through December 27th.

Boyun Jang’s process comprises of using photographs of others that she has either coincidentally or intentionally acquired as a medium, then fictionally restructuring memories and experience that she and the other have in common, then reenacting them through images and language.

This exhibition is a revision of an exhibition of the same name that took place in Gallery Factory (2011, Seoul, Korea) and it will include over 40 photographs, a projection, and an essay book of the artist’s experience recorded in a diaristic manner, all inspired by a photo album she received from an American through happenstance.

The artist gave the woman in the photo album an alias, calling her Lisa, then went to visit the actual places in the photographs, reenacting a person’s life and reconstructing it. In this process, the artist fictionally overlaps the stories of the people in the photographs with herself, thereby straddling between presence and absence. The viewers looking at Jang’s work become their own agents, creating their own narrative,  going beyond the unspecified individual and the artist, enabling others to recall similar memories.

It is significant to note that the photographs that appear in Jang’s works are not the motive, but a mere medium through which the artist’s inner world and ideas are revealed. Additionally, this exhibition will be a good opportunity to observe the pioneering of a new form, meaning, and expansiveness of Korean contemporary photography.

Boyun Jang (b. 1981) received her B.F.A in Painting and Minor Degree in Graphic Design from Seoul Women’s University and M.F.A in Painting from Seoul National University.
