DOOSAN Gallery Seoul is pleased to announce the Taewon Jang’s solo exhibition, on view from October 28 through November 25, featuring the process of reconstructing images from his memory to question the self identity.

For Jang, the current self is an accumulation of memories over the past, and these recollections are still vivid in his mind. He recalls the hazy memories remain in pieces and reconstruct memories into a new and specific image. Each piece of the memories becomes a part of his life history. And through the reconstruction process, Jang tries to look back on his origin and find the self identity.
Recollected images by Jang are mainly the remembrance and the fear from his family. Seperated from their own essence, the pictures are materialized into the images from the memory and the effects that influenced him. Moreover, as an accumulation of diverse memories, his body becomes another material. By attaching photographs and small light bulbs directly onto his body or by reproducing symbolized movements and places using the body, Jang combines the materialized memories with his body. Along with this, reviving into a light or itself from the remembrance in his photographs, a trauma of fire reminds him that it is a part of his lifetime memories forming him.
Jang records the combining process of past and present, or image and reality, in photographs of the effects of light and darkness. Although his work originates from his memory, it does not just replicate a certain events from the past, but metaphorically implicates the idea of life and death.
Taewon Jang lives and works in New York City. He received his BFA in photography from ChungAng University in Seoul, Korea and his MFA from Columbia University in New York. He has had solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery New York(2010), Gana Art New York (2009) and Heidi Cho Gallery (2006), all in New York City.
