We are pleased to present recent work from Hyesook Youn, the 2020 awardee of the 11th DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards in Theatre. Youn concentrates on stories that show how we live in today’s world, and presents it on stage in her own unique style. Her work has received praise for how it exudes theater-filling explosive energy at one moment, but in the next converts to a calm atmosphere that calls for cool and collected reasoning, requiring the audience to constantly ‘think.’
In Dry Land, a play supported by the DOOSAN ART CENTER Theatre Research project in 2017, Youn presents an energetic rendition of the psychological conflict behind the processes of two female students working toward sexual selfdetermination. In Bhopal, her work focuses on how a major gas leak accident is dealt with, presenting the pain of the victims as a metaphor of the Sewol Ferry incident. In We Arrived Together in This City, she uncannily foreshadows the COVID-19 era through two female figures who head to a pestilence-ravaged city to make money.
