‹The Mourner› is based on the novel of the same name by Tendo Arata, the winner of the 140th Naoki Awards. It premiered at Parco Theater in Japan in 2012, then was made into a film in 2015. Through the stories about Sizuto, who roams across the country mourning for the dead, as well as other characters surrounding him, this work reflects on how one should face the gesture of ‘remembering’ and feelings of ‘loss’. The special journey of a man who mourns while travelling places where people have died, throws multi-layered questions on what it means to sympathize with the sadness and death of others.
